Spokane Hangs on to Defeat Yaks

ActionThe Community Colleges of Spokane Men’s Basketball team hung on for a hard-fought 80-71 victory over the visiting Yaks of Yakima Valley College at Spokane Community College. Spokane got off to a great start and held an 11-5 advantage early in the game before Yakima responded to take the lead back. The Sasquatch struggled to score the ball consistently throughout the first half and eventually trailed 43-35 at half.

Spokane responded out of the gates to start the second half on back to back jump shots by Zack Humphrey and Kevin Bond and set the tone defensively by not allowing Yakima to score for the first three minutes. The second half was a back and forth battle until the last four minutes of the game when a steal by Chaz Johnson led to an easy basket by Danny Marshall that put the Sasquatch ahead to stay. Spokane made 9-11 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Sasquatch were led in scoring by Griffon Jones with 17 points. He also chipped in a game high 15 rebounds before fouling out. Chris Pynch added 16 points and eight assists. Marshall (12), Humphrey (11) and Bond (10) also scored in double figures for Spokane.

Spokane will travel to Oregon next week to play at Treasure Valley on Friday and at Blue Mountain on Saturday.
