Roller, Maine and Schmaltz Finish in Top 10, Spokane Finishes 2nd
Spokane was led by sophomores Andrew Roller (73-73 - 146), Dylan Maine (74-72 - 146) and Grahm Schmaltz (74-74 -148) at the Walla Walla Invitational played at Wine Valley Golf Course in Walla Walla, WA. The par 72, 6900 yard course features tight lies and very firm, fast and ungulated greens.
Spokane shot a team score of 11-over par, 299 on the first day of competition, trailing host Walla Walla CC by 11 shots. CCS Head Coach Scott Kramer commented, "The first day was ideal for scoring. It was about 65 degrees with a slight breeze and no rain. Our team struggled with getting our approach shots close with the huge mounds on the greens and once we were putting, we did not make many putts outside of 5 or 6 feet. It is the type of course that would be come much more scoreable once a person has played it a few times." Spokane made up 1 stroke on Walla Walla the second day in cold, wet and windy conditions. "Although the playing conditions were not ideal on the second day, the course played much softer and the approach shots were actually spinning and sticking on the greens," said Kramer.
2010-2011 NWAACC low shooter, Andrew Roller kept himself in contention the entire day, leading by a shot or two most of the way before experiencing a few bad breaks on the finishing holes. Dylan Maine missed a few short putts and still finished at even par on the second day. Fellow sophomore Brandon Koehler shot a 73 on the second day for a total of 150.
Spokane's next event is at the Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, WA on April 22-23.
