Spokane Sweeps the Bigfoot Invitational
The women and men’s golf teamed combined to sweep the annual Bigfoot Invitational Golf Tournament. The first round was played at the par 70, Esmeralda Golf Course, with the second round played at the par 72, MeadowWood Golf Course.
The men’s team found themselves down seven shots to eventual second place finisher Walla Walla CC after Sunday’s sunny round. Walla Walla shot a 280 team score, followed by Spokane at 287 and Skagit Valley College at 292. The first day was also an Eastern Region match between CCS, Columbia Basin College, Treasure Valley CC, and Walla Walla CC. Combining with the fall Eastern Region match in Ontario, Oregon, Spokane, CBC, and Walla are all knotted up at 4-2 in the standings. TVCC is in last place with a 0-6 record. Individual scoring for the region match was led by Sam Whitaker of WWCC with a 68, Jason Azzarito of CCS with a 69 and Rob Broadhead of WWCC also at 69. Matthew Standberg and Jordan Reeder of CCS shot 72 respectively.
The final day of the Bigfoot Invitational’s weather was the opposite of the first round. The players found themselves in weather with the temperature in the low forty’s, with a strong wind and constant rain showers. “It made for a long, cold day,” commented Coach Kramer. The bad conditions did not stop the host Sasquatch from making up fifteen shots on Walla Walla and winning the tournament by an eight shot margin. “I am very proud of the way the guys hung in there and battled through those miserable conditions. It is very easy to lose focus and not finish strong when all of your equipment is soaked and your hands are freezing cold,” said Coach Kramer.
Jason Azzarito captured medalist honors by an impressive five shots. He shot a 143 (69-74) and was followed by Jonathan Lumper’s tie for third with a 149 (74-75). Jordan Reeder finished in a tie for seventh with a two-day total of 151 (72-79). The victory marks the first win in a big tournament this season for the Sasquatch.
