Sasquatch Finish in Second Place, Led by Johnson

TylerThe Community Colleges of Spokane Men’s Golf Team finished in a tie for second place in the fall all-NWAACC golf tournament hosted by Skagit Valley College at the Avalon Golf Complex in Burlington, WA.

Spokane defeated Bellevue Community College in a score card playoff to own second place outright and maintain 9 points towards the season ending conference totals.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Coeur d’Alene, ID) paced Spokane with rounds of 74-76 to finish in a tie for 4th place with freshman teammate Justin Sprengel (Kennewick, WA) who competed as an individual and shot 72-78.  Corey Meyers (Deer Park, WA) shot 71-81 to finish 9th and Taylor Porter (Coeur d’Alene, ID) shot 75-79 to finish 11th.

Avalon is a 27 hole golf complex and the teams competed on the North and West the first day and the South and North the second day.  Spokane shot a 298 team score the first day, overcoming strong winds and tricky greens and faltered a little bit on the closing 9 holes on the second day and shot a team score of 310.  “Avalon is a very difficult golf course from the tips.  It is very demanding off the tee and the greens have a lot of subtle slope to them.  When the wind is blowing the way it was, it becomes even more challenging.  I am pleased with the way the guys hung on the first day, but we let the elements get the best of us on the second day.  It was a learning experience for sure,” commented Coach Scott Kramer.

The scores across the board were extremely high compared to most NWAACC golf tournaments.  Avalon is one of the more difficult courses the NWAACC schools will play all year.

Next up for the Sasquatch is the North Idaho College Invitational on October 4-5 at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden, ID.
