Spokane Defeats Big Bend to Claim Third Place Trophy

It was barn burner in the men's third place game as Spokane and Big Bend exchanged leads thirteen times and were tied on seven occasions thoughout the contest. The Vikings held a three point lead with less than a minute remaining when Spokane went on a 8-3 run to take the game 79-77. Within the final minute of the game, Preston Wynne hit a tough 3-point basket to give Spokane a two-point lead. Hayes Garrity of Big Bend then countered with a 3-pointer of his own to put the Vikings back on top.

DeAngelo Jones followed with a tough runner to give Spokane a one point lead again. Garrity missed a floater that bounced and hung on the rim before falling into the hands of Spokane’s Matt Barnes who was fouled and hit one of two free throws with 9.7 seconds left.

Marlowe Brim of Spokane then drew a charge on the Vikings’ Brandon Brooke with 0.3 seconds left to seal the win.

“It is not very often that you take a charge to end a season!” Spokane Coach Clint Hull stated. “There are a lot of emotions running through us right now…We are excited to end the season with a win, and we are disappointed that we are so close to reaching our ultimate goal, but ultimately we are saddened by the fact that this was our last game with this amazing group of young men,” Hull added.

Wynne turned in a huge game for the Sasquatch with 34 points, with many coming down the stretch at crucial times. Brim added 16 points off the bench. Nate Frisbie and Jones took care of the boards as they combined on 15 rebounds.

Garrity led the Vikings with 24pts and 5 assists.

Spokane ends its season with a third place trophy and a 22-8 record.
