PULLMAN, Wash. -- Chanel James, a talented sprinter from Tacoma, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and compete for Washington State University starting in the fall of 2010, Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Thursday.

James is currently attending and competing for Community Colleges of Spokane. Last spring James captured three titles at the 2009 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championships: the 100m dash, long jump and triple jump titles, and finished second in the 200m dash.

A graduate of Wilson High in Tacoma, James letters in soccer, cross country and track and field. She was a two-time state 4A champion in the 100m dash and won the 200m dash once. She had top three state finishes in the long jump twice. Her lifetime-best marks are 11.81 seconds for the 100m, 24.53 for the 200m and 18-feet, 8 1/4 inches in the long jump.

In addition to being an outstanding track athlete, James is also a talented singer, winning the Tacoma Idol contest, placing second in the Washington Idol contest and auditioning for American Idol television show last year.

James' father is Paul Johns, and her parents are Michel and Rebecca James. Michel James was an outstanding wide receiver on the 1983-86 Cougar football teams and went on to play professionally for the Miami Dolphins and the Houston Oilers. Michel James also competed on the WSU track team for Coach Sloan as a decathlete and cleared 7-feet in the high jump.

"It is very exciting to have Chanel James finally officially become a member of Cougar Track and Field," Assistant coach Mark Macdonald said. "We have known Chanel since she was a Cougar Track camper four years ago as a high school student. Chanel is the top sprint recruit in the Northwest so it will be exciting to see her in a Cougar uniform in 2011. The coaches at Spokane Community College did a great job in helping Chanel mature as a student-athlete, so she will be ready to compete at the Pac 10 level immediately. Chanel's signing with WSU is significant because it continues the tradition of the best sprinters from the state of Washington choosing Washington State University. Chanel will be a valuable addition to the team in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay."
