Spokane Holds Off Douglas Rally in 10-9 Thriller
Spokane built an early cushion, weathered a six-run surge, and then answered late to edge Douglas 10-9 in a back-and-forth battle Saturday afternoon.
Spokane struck quickly with three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues and patient at-bats. Addyson Stewart reached on an error to bring home the game's first run, Rachel Nebeker followed with an RBI walk, and Hayle Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
The lead grew to 6-0 by the third. Olivia Jore doubled in a run, and Samantha Rensvold added an RBI groundout as Spokane appeared firmly in control.
Douglas flipped the momentum in the bottom of the third, erupting for six runs to tie the game. RBI hits from Purper, Penner, and Johnson, combined with defensive errors and a passed ball, erased the deficit in one inning.
Spokane briefly reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Rachel Nebeker, but Douglas answered again in the fifth. A triple by Goncalves and another RBI single from Johnson put Douglas in front, 8-7.
The decisive swing came in the sixth. Skylar Struck singled in the tying run before Spokane capitalized on another Douglas error to move ahead. Olivia Jore added a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run frame that gave Spokane a 10-8 advantage.
Douglas threatened in the seventh, trimming the deficit to one on an RBI single from Purper, but Spokane reliever Cassy Seifert closed the door. After entering in the fourth, Seifert earned the win with four innings of work, striking out six.
Spokane totaled eight hits and drew six walks, while swiping five bases to keep pressure on the defense. Addyson Stewart scored three times, and Olivia Jore finished with two RBIs. For Douglas, Johnson led the offense with four hits and two RBIs in the loss.
In a game marked by 10 combined errors and constant momentum swings, Spokane's timely sixth-inning rally proved to be the difference.
