Spokane Battles Past Treasure Valley in High-Scoring Opener, Seifert Dominates in Game Two Victory
Sasquatch picked up a pair of wins Friday afternoon over Treasure Valley, surviving a 26-run slugfest in game one before riding a dominant pitching performance from Cassy Seifert to a 6-1 victory in game two.
Game One: Spokane 14, Treasure Valley 12
The Sasquatch offense erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits in the opener, overcoming multiple Treasure Valley rallies in a back-and-forth contest.
Spokane struck first with five runs in the opening inning. Emma Oergel delivered an RBI single, Shelby Swanson added an RBI double, Cadence Hyndman drove in another run with a double, and Zoie Maughan capped the inning with a two-run homer to give Spokane a 5-0 lead.
Skyler Struck added a solo home run in the third inning to push the lead to 6-0 before Treasure Valley answered with eight runs in the bottom half. Kalae Thompson highlighted the inning with a grand slam as the Chukars surged ahead 8-6.
The scoring continued throughout the middle innings. Cassy Seifert launched a solo home run in the fourth to trim the deficit to one before Treasure Valley added another run on a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Spokane reclaimed the lead when Hyndman crushed a three-run homer to put the Sasquatch ahead 10-9. Treasure Valley answered immediately as Thompson struck again with a three-run blast in the bottom of the inning to give the Chukars a 12-10 advantage.
Spokane delivered the final response in the sixth inning. Emma Cooke drove in a run with a single, Swanson tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Struck lined a two-run single to center field to give Spokane the lead for good at 14-12.
Shelby Swanson earned the win in relief, tossing the final three innings while allowing just two runs and striking out five.
Game Two: Spokane 6, Treasure Valley 1
Game two featured a completely different script as Seifert dominated in the circle and Spokane pulled away late for the sweep.
Treasure Valley scored its only run in the first inning, but Seifert settled in quickly and overwhelmed the Chukars lineup the rest of the afternoon. The freshman right-hander threw a complete-game one-hitter, allowing just one unearned run while striking out 11.
Spokane finally broke through in the fifth inning when Emma Oergel lined a two-run single to score Lilley Triplett and Phoebe Holm for a 2-1 lead.
The Sasquatch added insurance in the seventh inning. Skyler Struck blasted a three-run homer to center field, scoring Shelby Swanson and Emma Cooke, before Allison Lapano added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-1.
Seifert closed out the final inning to secure the sweep.
