Sasquatch Rally Falls Short Against Southwestern Oregon in NWAC Tournament
The Sasquatch battled back late but could not complete the comeback Thursday evening, falling 3-2 to Southwestern Oregon in the second round of the NWAC Softball Championships. Spokane now moves to face Everett on Friday at 11 a.m. in Portland.
After opening the NWAC Championships with an emphatic first-round win, the Spokane softball team battled until the final out Thursday evening but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Southwestern Oregon at Delta Park.
The Sasquatch trailed 3-0 entering the sixth inning before mounting a late rally. Spokane cut the deficit to one when sophomore outfielder Cadence Hyndman delivered a clutch two-run double to left-center field, scoring Emma Cooke and pinch runner Izabella Hernandez to make it 3-2.
Spokane threatened again in the seventh, but Southwestern Oregon pitcher Maggie Young closed out the victory to send the Sasquatch into the consolation bracket.
Emma Oergel paced Spokane offensively with a pair of hits, while Cooke, Shelby Swanson, Hyndman, Skyler Struck, and Rachel Nebeker each added one hit. Hyndman finished with both Spokane RBIs.
Cooke reached base twice with a single and a walk, while Hernandez scored after entering as a pinch runner in the sixth inning rally.
In the circle, Cassy Seifert turned in another complete-game effort, striking out eight batters over six innings. Southwestern Oregon scored single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, including a solo home run from Natalie Rey in the second.
The Sasquatch finished with seven hits and stranded eight runners in the contest.
Spokane will continue postseason play Friday morning against Everett at 11 a.m. at the NWAC Championships in Portland.
