Sasquatch Advance to NWAC Final Four with Upset Win Over Edmonds
The Sasquatch continued their postseason run Saturday, knocking off unbeaten Edmonds 7-5 to advance to the Final Four of the NWAC Championship Tournament.
Spokane softball is headed to the NWAC Championship Tournament Final Four following a 7-5 win over top-seeded Edmonds on Saturday morning at Delta Park in Portland, Oregon.
The Sasquatch jumped out early with seven runs through the first four innings and held off a late Edmonds rally behind a complete-game effort from sophomore pitcher Cassy Seifert.
Spokane wasted no time taking control offensively. Emma Oergel scored the game's first run in the opening inning before Skyler Struck delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. The Sasquatch added two more runs in the third inning when Cadence Hyndman ripped a two-run double to center field, scoring Emma Cooke and Oergel for a 3-0 advantage.
The offense exploded again in the fourth inning. Shelby Swanson lined a two-run double to right field to extend the lead to 5-0 before Hyndman struck again later in the inning with a two-run single that plated Struck and Swanson, pushing Spokane's advantage to 7-0.
Hyndman led the Sasquatch offense with four RBIs while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Swanson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, while Oergel crossed the plate three times and reached base four times with three walks.
Edmonds broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single from Leda Lesher before mounting a late comeback attempt in the seventh. Shelby Baguio launched a three-run home run to trim the lead to 7-4, and Scarlette Chapman followed with a solo homer to make it a two-run game.
Seifert settled in to secure the final outs and finish off the complete-game victory. The sophomore scattered five hits while striking out eight over seven innings.
Despite collecting just six hits, Spokane capitalized on nine walks and timely hitting to earn one of its biggest wins of the season against the previously unbeaten Tritons.
With the victory, Spokane advances into the NWAC Championship Tournament Final Four and will take the field again today at 2:30 p.m. in Portland.
