Howard and Brooks Combine for 47, Spokane Falls in High-Scoring Battle
Spokane put four players in double figures and erased an early double-digit deficit, but Wenatchee Valley held off the late push to hand the Sasquatch a 91-88 road loss Wednesday night.
Spokane battled back multiple times after trailing 29-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Sasquatch responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring Wenatchee Valley 22-15 to cut the deficit to 44-40 at halftime.
The game remained tight throughout the second half. Spokane put together a 28-point fourth quarter and had opportunities late, but Wenatchee Valley's efficiency at the free throw line and timely shot-making proved to be the difference.
Camia Howard led Spokane with 23 points, attacking the paint and going 11-of-13 from the free throw line. She added nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals in an all-around effort. Journee Brooks delivered 24 points, knocking down four three-pointers and finishing 10-of-14 from the line while pulling down nine rebounds.
Karis Santucci provided an efficient 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and Alahondra Perez added 13 points and nine rebounds as Spokane shot 48 percent from the field and 58 percent from beyond the arc.
Spokane's aggressiveness showed at the stripe, where the Sasquatch attempted 43 free throws and converted 33. They also controlled the glass with a 39-27 rebounding advantage.
However, Wenatchee Valley countered with a dominant performance from Jewett, who poured in 35 points on 14-of-20 shooting while adding nine rebounds and seven steals. Cylia St Pierre chipped in 25 points, hitting five three-pointers to keep Spokane's defense stretched.
Despite forcing 10 turnovers and matching Wenatchee Valley's 12 assists, Spokane could not overcome the early deficit and a 19-of-21 showing at the free throw line by the home side.
Spokane's balanced scoring effort and fourth-quarter surge kept the game within reach until the final possessions, but Wenatchee Valley's late execution secured the narrow win.
